But seriously, it's well deserved takes a lot of time and thought to come up with a list like that!

Multiple layers would be like adding a layer directly on top of the previous one to get a more solid color. You can also do layering to get a gradient, where using more shades of paint will yield a smoother gradient, like this. I do "feathering" on most of the initial highlights I do, where I apply a line of paint on an edge, then "feather" the paint out with another damp brush. Then I apply thin lines of brighter highlights along the edge.

Ah, and I typically go from dark to light when highlighting.
