The bases look great! To paint them how about a neutral base colour, and different coloured washes to give the individual cobbles some variation? Sepia, Fleshshade, Agrax, Carroburg etc..? Should be quick and effective!

That sounds like a good idea. I think you may just have convinced me to undercoat the bases in white rather than black mate.
