    Default [Fluff/40K] My Space Marines

Some of you will know my Custom Space Marine Chapter, Noctius Ignitis. I once began the building up of Fluff for them but just stopped. Now, yesterday, I got my hands on the first seventy-odd pages of the upcoming Deathwatch supplement: Rites of Battle. In this, it include a (rather good) Chapter Creator. Using it, I've re-worked my Chapter. At the moment, it's all Bulletpoints... But I hope to work it better... Soon.

I, however, need a little help. I rolled four names for the Chapter as well as Noctius Ignitis. I want your opinion on what name to go for. Just click in the poll.

Why Was The Chapter Founded? Strategic Prognostication – It was divined that a massive force would assault the area around Subpono and would destroy all. The Lords, while slightly troubled at the loss of the Subpono system, was more concerned that the force, unless stopped, would continue to spread out, possibly destroying the Sector. The Space Marines were founded to avert that.

When Was The Chapter Founded? 34th Millennium (Alongside the Honoured Dead at the Year of Ghosts)

    Progenitor: Salamanders

    Gene-Stock Purity: A New Generation

Codex Demeanours: Uphold The Honour Of The Emperor

Gene-Seed Deficiencies: Lost Zygote: Sus-an Membrane

    Chapter Flaw: Chapter Cult

Chapter Characteristic Modifier: +5 Toughness/+5 Willpower (‘Duty Unto Death’)

    Hero of Legend:
A Chaplain who led an assault against a Xenos race he himself discovered. Now, only the archives of the Chapter recall the races name so utterly was the Race and their works cast down.

Chapter Homeworld: Medieval World (Subpono II)

Terrain: Jungle – Settlement is along the Coast and the Fortress-Monastery resides upon the peak of the tallest mountain.

    Relationship with World: Stewardship

    Chapter Organisation: Divergent Chapter

    Combat Doctrine: Thunderhawk Assault

Solo Mode Ability: May re-roll Toughness Tests. At level 4, +10 Modifier. At level 8, one additional degree of success.

    Squad Mode Ability: Attack:
Siege-Breaker: Battle-Brother and Marines in Support Range may re-roll Damage rolls against targets in Cover.

    Defence:
Only In Death: Battle-Brother and Marines in Support Range may ignore Critical Damage effects that do not kill them until the end of the ability. They then suffer full effects.

    Restriction: Librarian

Special Equipment: Totemic Charm (My DW Marine has an orange fire tattooed over his left eye with a jet-black hammer going up the right side of his face, looking like the hammer will strike the fire for example)

Chapter Beliefs: The Emperor Above All

Current Status: Over-strength (Six Companies. 1-5 with 200 Marines. The Sixth is “Reserve” with 250 Marines)

Chapter Allies: Imperial Guard raised from Subpono V/VI

Chapter Enemies: Warboss ‘Ead Stompa and his Waaagh!
    Word Bearers

    Name:
    Noctius Ignitis (The Original)
    Star Falcons
    Iron Hunters
    Crimson Wardens
    Red Lions

    Heraldry: To Be Decided

Colours: Currently, Green with Black Shoulderpads and Trim to suit Company – might change

I'm voting for the more old-school latin-y name, just because it's more interesting than the others...sounds more 'professional' (and that's obviously what you want in a chapter name ).

As for fluff, the basics sound good. Could do with a bit of development, a bit of flesh to fill out the skeleton as it were, which I'm sure is your next move. Some questions that spring to mind:

How did 'The Lords' know they needed a whole SM chapter to stop them getting the crap beaten out of them?

How did they go about creating the chapter?...I mean, you can't just say "I need some space marines", and expect someone in an office on some far off work to spring into life and go - "This guy needs a chapter, get them packaged up and sent there immediately!"

Why 200 marines to a company?

    Solid idea though :D

    To answer your questions:

    1) The Lords refers to the High Lords, in case you didn't know. And they didn't. They could only guess. Subpono already supplied a large number of Guard Regiments and so, they decided, that the big guns was required.

    2) Unsure at this exact moment.

    3) To use the original idea: Each of the five 'main' Tribes (Now Kingdoms) hated each other to the point of 'Kill on Sight'. When they trained them, they fought they still had this pretty much until they got their Power Armour. So, during training, they arranged each Tribe in separate Companies. They ended up becoming Battle-Brothers through that and so they just stuck together. Now, because they only had Five Companies, they maintained double strength to ensure a fighting force.

Hey Gin cool little tool, I'd like to use it for The Shades of Persecution (though I don't think they'd have marines put into the Deathwatch)

I like that you're carrying on the fluff of the Noctius Ignitis and I agree with Dim, keep that name its awesome and really sticks out from the normal names for other chapters.

    Keep it up

    Righto;

Looks ok to me, for a starting point for more serious fluff later on. It seems that the Chapter Generator is a good little tool, I'll have to see if I can't have a gander at it soon for my White Minotaurs.

Seems that others have already picked up on a couple of niggles, so I'm not going to repeat them.

In terms of the name for the Chapter, I voted for the Star Falcons 'cos I thought it sounded pretty cool, though I also like the Crimson Wardens. I like the CW title because it seems to tie in with your fluff, about guarding against invasion. It's also very different from the name of any other SM chapter I've heard of.

It implies constant vigilance and a very authoritarian undertone. That's my two pence, anyway.

It seems the majority call for Noctius Ignitis. Fair enough. This makes me sad however, I like the feel of either Iron Hunters or Crimson Wardens. Perhaps a second Chapter is called for...

Regardless, I want to do Colour Scheme now. The existing scheme is thus:

    Now, I have two issues:

It is stupidly close to Salamander and it doesn't tie in with the name (Nights of Fire - which is another reason why I felt like changing it, the Marines don't do much Fire or Night-Ops).

So, I open the floor... Suggestions?

Don't do night ops? I am disappointed in you dan. There are many many spec ops marine chapters. Raven guard for one are very spec opsy.

Night ops and Spec ops in my mind are the same thing.

Yes, but Noctius Ignitis was never one for that. They fight for the Emperor's Honour. Therefore, it's through the front door, bang bang, cluck cluck, dead, time for the after-party.
